Single8′ wins the Grand Jury Prize

The Summer Asian Film Festival 2024 has its winners. They were announced on the second last day of the festival, closing a festive and very crowded day with a tribute session to Akira Toriyama, the world premiere of The Game of Shark, the last competition screenings, and the final night at La Bassa dels Hermanos. The night dedicated to India once again filled the audience seats in a closing ceremony where the award-winning films were announced, and the blockbuster HanuMan was screened. After a dance performance by Nataraja Dance and a dinner featuring dishes from the Asian country, the festival's masters of ceremonies announced the award-winning films divided into three categories: the Lucky Cat, the Grand Jury Prize, and the Critics' Prize.

The Lucky Cat, awarded by the public through popular vote, went to Sabakan. The film by Japanese director Tomoki Kanazawa, a summer fable about two boys traveling across an island to see dolphins, opened the festival and emerged as the favorite among the 21st edition's spectators.

The Grand Jury Prize, this year composed of directors Caye Casas and Dhanraj Barkote and film programmer Juan Pérez de la Torre, also went to a Japanese film. Single8 by Kazuya Konaka won the jury prize «for reflecting the vital decisions that every aspiring filmmaker has faced». The jury also decided to give three special mentions to three other films from China, South Korea, and India. They are A Long Shot, Soulmate —for the leading performance by Kim Da-mi— and Aatmapamphlet, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Critics' Prize went, for the second consecutive year, to a Mongolian film following Harvest Moon. If Only I Could Hibernate by debut director Zoljargal Purevdash, a moving coming-of-age story about a brilliant student from a very humble family striving for a better future, won the favor of the accredited press.

Tribute to Akira Toriyama with a performance by Arnau Tordera.

The morning at L'Atlàntida de Vic was intense and featured what can now be considered one of the festival's historic sessions. The main hall of the center was packed to pay tribute to the recently deceased Akira Toriyama, creator of the legendary animes Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump. Special screenings of spots and classic films of Goku and company were combined with a performance by Arnau Tordera singing two Dragon Ball songs in Catalan and a popular cosplay contest. After the session, the party continued with the world premiere of the latest film by Grand Honorary Prize winner Minoru Kawasaki, The Game of Shark, presented by the Japanese filmmaker, and the screening of the last film in the Official Competition Section, the Mongolian If Only I Could Hibernate, preceded by the latest short film by Tarragona director Adrià Guxens, A Hakka Song.
