‘Sweet Potato Flavoured Ice Cream’ wins the Lucky Cat and ‘Next Sohee’ gets the Jury Prize

The 20th edition of the Asian Summer Film Festival already has a list of winners. The Audience Award - Lucky Cat went to the Chinese film Sweet Potato Flavoured Ice Cream, by Wang Chong —present at the festival along with the film's producer, Sijie He—, an endearing story that portrays the summer of a boy in the countryside with his grandmother and uncle.

The jury, made up of filmmakers Raquel Barrera, Jaume Balagueró and Paul Urkijo, decided to award the Grand Jury Prize to Next Sohee, by Korean director July Jung, «for its ability to go deep and capture you in an apparently simple story that ends up being devastating and moving». The jury gave two special mentions to the Mongolian film Harvest Moon, by Amarsaikhan Baljinnyam; and also, to the Korean film Special Delivery, by Park Dae-min. Finally, the Asian Summer Film Fest 2023 Critics' Choice Award, decided by accredited journalists, went to Harvest Moon.

The three major awards are in addition to the two Honorary Grand Prizes awarded this year. In addition to the Japanese kung fu actor Yasuaki Kurata, who received the award on Wednesday night, the festival gave this honorary award to the Catalan distributor Xavier Catafal, pioneer in the distribution of Asian cinema in the country and responsible for the release in Spanish theaters of mythical films such as Fist of Legend, Akira, Porco Rosso, Battle Royale, Ong Bak or Gangs of Wasseypur, and essential series such as Dragon Ball or Detective Conan through Manga Films and Issan Entertainment.
